about

"Through all the different versions of myself, I find it hard to figure out which parts I created and which parts I genuinely am. I'm learning that I have to accept myself for what I am. If I become a version of myself that I nitpicked I will remain unhappy. Unfortunately, my false sense of self has been spreading to my music like a disease. I have to stop myself from trying to write the song that was a hit last summer because, in all honesty, I do care what people think about me. Re-recording songs I've already released helped me remember why I did all this in the first place. I had to go back to the space I was in when I was writing that song and sit with whatever I was feeling. It's hard to sit with your feelings, but I genuinely believe I'll lose the parts of myself that I am if I don't sit with what I feel. I originally wrote my songs for myself. I wrote them alone in my bedroom never intending the world to listen. I wrote them because it was the only way I knew how to cope. It's been wild transitioning into a world where my diary is on streaming platforms where anyone can listen to how bad it sucked to have my heartbroken, LOL....and strangely making it into a part-time job. It feels wrong, but it’s a choice I made. It's also been amazing and rewarding to hear how others can relate and sit with their feelings through my music. I am only 18. I have a lot to learn and sit with in terms of this music stuff, and it starts with myself. This album is the most personal project I've done, and it's so far from perfect purposefully. It's not about fancy chord progressions, complicated melodies, 3/4 time signatures, or multi-layered vocals. It's about how a song made you feel. I wouldn't want to make music for anything other than that." -Ailani
